18-year-old Amelia has recently been fitted with a cochlear implant, enabling her to hear, but she is struggling to accept her place in a hearing world. When she witnesses the murder of a policewoman, she is reluctantly propelled into a cacophony of police corruption, betrayal, drugs and murder.

In an explosive finale, Amelia heads to a rural police station, but refuses to reveal her identity, worried that the corrupt officers on the Drugs Squad might be able to track her down. Amelia believes her location has been breached and makes contact with Jim, who races to collect her. He realises too late that Mac and Lee have followed him and confronts them, insisting Amelia head home for her own safety. Amelia tracks down Rocky at the boxing gym and in a big showdown reveals that Mac and Lee murdered his girlfriend. Rocky decides to come clean about the Drug Squad's corruption to obtain a justice of sorts for Jane Shilliday's murder.

Amelia and Jim's families are subjected to intimidation tactics by the corrupt Drugs Squad in an attempt to thwart the investigation into Jane Shilliday's murder. When Amelia lip reads a conversation between Rocky and Mac and relays the information to Jim, he becomes certain that Mac is Jane Shilliday's other killer. When Lee Griggson comes to Amelia's house to intimidate her, she runs away, without taking her cochlear implant.

Amelia identifies one of Jane Shilliday's killers - a detective on the drugs squad. DCI Peter MacKinnon, better known as Mac (Rod Hallett), heads up the successful drugs squad. Jim (Douglas Henshall) becomes increasingly suspicious that there is corruption on a large scale in the squad and that the murder of the policewoman, Jane Shilliday, who was romantically involved with drugs squad copper Rocky (Richie Campbell), is connected. Jim's position on Shilliday's murder investigation becomes increasingly compromised as his own team on the murder squad close in on the very witness he is trying to protect: Amelia (Genevieve Barr). Amelia offers to lipread surveillance DVDs for Jim. She lipreads a conversation between Rocky and a recently-murdered informant - revealing that the drugs squad are on the take. With the evidence stacking up against the drugs squad, it is only a matter of time before Jim's colleagues find out who the unknown key witness to the murder is.

When DCI Jim Edwards takes on the homicide investigation of a murdered policewoman, he has no idea how it is going to impact on his relationship with his family. When it transpires that his deaf niece, Amelia, witnessed the murder it puts huge pressure on Jim; he decides to withhold Amelia as a formal witness to protect her, but Jim struggles to make headway with the case whilst keeping Amelia's identity a secret.
