TVO.org will live stream four special public lectures from Perimeter Institute on Sunday, September 18, starting at 10:00 a.m. The lineup includes:

  • 10 - 11 a.m. George Dyson, science historian and author, on the origins of the digital universe
  • 12 - 1 p.m. Hod Lipson, director of the Computational Synthesis Lab at Cornell University, on the rise of programmable matter and the future of "3D printers"
  • 2 - 3 p.m. Natalia Toro, faculty at Perimeter Institute, on the world’s most ambitious scientific experiment, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC)
  • 4 - 5 p.m. Julie Payette, astronaut from the Canadian Space Agency, with perspectives from the International Space Station on scientific research and international diplomacy

Stephen Hawking: The Power of Ideas

At 8 p.m. TVO presents the 60-minute world broadcast exclusive of Stephen Hawking: The Power of Ideas. The program will air on TV and also be live streamed online at TVO.org, and explores:

  • The importance of theoretical physics and Prof. Hawking's specific accomplishments
  • His role as a top science communicator in popularizing research and discovery
  • Lessons from his incredible life journey and how he inspires others throughout science and beyond

Prof. Hawking's many accomplishments will be detailed throughout the program - which includes grand opening celebrations, a mini-documentary and a compelling panel discussion featuring:

  • Neil Turok, leading cosmologist and director of Perimeter Institute
  • S. James Gates Jr., director of the Center for String and Particle Theory at the University of Maryland
  • Julie Payette, Canadian astronaut
  • Rebecca Saxe, cognitive neuroscientist

Hosted by Ivan Semeniuk, science journalist and broadcaster, the program will also include comments from Prof. Hawking and tributes from famous Canadians – including Rick Hansen, David Foster and other special guests - to punctuate the hour.
