Dear TVO supporter
Given the conversations taking place regarding TVO’s decision to decommission eight over-the-air transmitters, I want to thank you for your support for TVO.
Rest assured we make these decisions with great deliberation, focusing on the best interest of Ontarians. TVO is deeply committed to reaching as many people as possible using all of the communication platforms now available to us.
In the 1980s, TVO relied on more than 200 over-the-air transmitters to deliver our broadcast signal. Since then, technology has evolved and the number of OTA transmitters has been reduced by all broadcasters, and delivering to multiple platforms has become the standard. Today, the expectations and preferences of viewers are changing as people turn to digital and online, on-demand services and we are doing our best to juggle all of these demands.
We are supported by government funding and generous donors. At TVO we take our responsibility to manage every dollar very seriously. This decision allows us to make a greater impact in the lives of millions of Ontarians by investing in high-quality educational content rather than in technical infrastructure.
By redirecting resources, TVO is able to continue to support independent producers in the creation of award-winning TVOKids content, to deliver in-depth current affairs through an Ontario lens and ground-breaking documentaries, and to develop new educational resources for students to use inside and outside of the classroom – all delivering on our mandate to create a better world through the power of learning.
Thank you for your loyalty to TVO.
Lisa de Wilde, C.M.
Chief Executive Officer, TVO
